Looker Studio is a Google platform that makes it easy to create beautiful dashboards and reports.

Looker Studio is a data analysis and data visualization tool that allows users to connect to multiple data sources to query, explore, and display data easily and intuitively.

1. Looker Studio Overview

  1. Create a new report

  2. Quickly find a report file

  3. File types tab: you can switch between reports, data sources and explorers

  4. Select select:

    • help or feedback

    • user settings

    • quickly access other Google products

  5. Quickly filter files: recently viewed, files shared with you, files you created, trash

  6. Create a quick Looker Studio report with a ready-made template or quickly create a blank report you customize

  1. Logo, you can click to return to the Looker Studio homepage

  2. Menu bar: many functions you can also quickly access here

  3. From left to right:

    • Refresh data

    • Share a report

    • Preview a report

    • Get help from Google or feedback

    • Quickly access other Google products

    • Manage your account

  4. Manage report pages

  5. Choose mode: undo or redo

  6. Add charts to your report

  7. Add interactive controls (choose data display time, filter..)

  8. Add text, draw lines and shapes to the report

  9. Add a data source to the report

  10. Open the Theme and Layout panel

  11. Edit a chart type

  12. Select a chart to display the properties sheet for that chart.

  13. Configure the data properties of the selected chart

  14. Available fields. You can drag dimensions and metrics into the data attribute table.

2. How to create a report with Looker Studio

Get started with creating a report

  1. In the upper left corner, select the (+) sign

  2. Select a report type

Add a data source to a report

Data sources allow you to manage data connections and configure the fields you can use in your report. When you create a new report, the “Add data” to the report panel opens. This allows you to:

  • Select existing data

  • Create a new data source

  1. Select the data source type: My data source

  2. Select a data source you want to connect to the Looker Studio report

  3. Click the “Add” button to add data

Create a new data source in Looker Studio reports

  1. Select data connection (Connect to data)

  2. Select the type of data you want to connect

  3. In this new data connection guide, I will guide you to connect to a Google Analytics data source. Click on “Google Analytics”

  1. You continue to select the account name you want to connect

  2. Select a property of the Google Analytics account

  3. Select the view to connect to the Looker Studio report

  4. Select “Add” to start data connection

  5. Click the add to report button on the next popup to confirm adding the data source to the Looker Studio report

Add charts and dashboards to the report

  1. Click on “add a chart” and drag it into the report frame

  2. Click on the chart to adjust the properties

  3. Select dimensions and metrics to report

View the report of you

  1. Select the “View” button in the upper right corner

  2. Select “Edit” to return to the editor

Share the report

  1. Click the “share” button in the upper right corner

  2. Enter the email of the person you want to share the report with, then click Done to complete

  3. Note: you can optionally allow the shared person to only view the report or you can customize the report settings by clicking the gear in the upper right corner of the sharing popup share.

3. Make a real report with your website

    • Go to https://lookerstudio.google.com/, create a new report
    • Connect Google Looker data with Google Analytics (Detailed instructions at: Section 2 -> 2.2)
    • Block 1: Smooth Time Series Chart
      • Aspect: Date
      • Analysis Aspect: Event Name
      • Metric: Views
      • Leave the remaining parameters as default
    • Block 2: Time Series Chart smooth time
      • Aspect: Day of the week
      • Analytical aspect: Unselected
      • Metric: Sessions
      • Leave the rest of the parameters to default
    • Block 3: Chart Table
      • Aspect: Page Path
      • Metrics: Active Users in 1 Day, Active Users in 7 Days, Active Users in 30 Days
      • Leave the rest of the parameters to default definition
    • Block 4: Chart Table
      • Dimensions: Channel, Campaign, Source
      • Metrics: 1-day active users, 7-day active users, 30-day active users
      • Leave the rest of the parameters to default
